Spiegelmeer - Nature
The Spiegelmeer is the large pond in the Maria Hendrika Park in Ostend. The park, which locals call Het Bosje, lies south of the centre.
What can you expect at the Spiegelmeer?
- History: King Leopold II had the park laid out to a design by Eduard Keilig; it opened in 1892. When it was extended in 1896 and 1897, the Spiegelmeer and the Konijnenvijver were dug, doubling the park's size.
- On the water: From spring to the end of September you can hire rowing boats, kayaks and pedal boats at Koninginnehof. The Nelson Mandela Bridge crosses the water.
- Activities: The park also has playgrounds, a traffic park and a mini golf course.
Practical information
- Status: The park has been a protected monument since 2006.
- Ideal for: A lovely place for a walk, a picnic or an afternoon on the water with children.
